Connor’s
best friend, Branwell, has been accused of a terrible crime—shaking and dropping
his baby half-sister, Nikki. Nikki is in a coma, and it is not certain whether
she will live or die. Because of the circumstances Branwell’s brain shuts down
and he is unable to verbally communicate. Branwell is essentially struck dumb.
Connor knows that Branwell loved his little sister, and he would never do
anything to harm her. Connor seeks to uncover the truth about what happened to
Nikki. He also seeks to find ways to communicate with Branwell. Connor
remembers reading a story about a doctor who was able to communicate with his
patient by having the patient blink one time for “yes” and two times for “no.”
Connor takes the idea a step further and creates flash cards with words and
phrases. Branwell is able to communicate with his eyes, even though he is
unable to tell Connor the keys to what exactly happened to Nikki. Connor must
find out the truth before it is too late. --book suggestion by Mrs. Babin
